Today marks the commemoration of Saint Marcellinus, Pope of Rome, who served as the predecessor to Pope Marcellus. According to tradition, Emperor Diocletian threatened Marcellinus with torture, leading him to offer sacrifices to idols, for which the emperor richly rewarded him. Marcellinus later deeply repented his denial of Christ, weeping day and night, much like the Apostle Peter. He attended an episcopal council in Campania, dressed in sackcloth and covered in ashes, where he confessed his sin and requested judgment from the fathers. They advised him to judge himself, whereupon he renounced his priestly office and decreed that his body should not be buried but thrown to dogs, cursing anyone who would dare bury him. He then confronted Emperor Diocletian, renounced his faith, and denounced the idols. Enraged, the emperor had him tortured and killed outside the city along with three companions: Claudius, Quirinus, and Antoninus. While the bodies of the three were immediately buried, Marcellinus's body lay unburied for thirty-six days. Subsequently, Saint Peter appeared to the new Pope Marcellus, commanding him to bury Marcellinus's body, stating, 'He who humbles himself will be exalted.'
