Humanoid Robot 'Pemba' Achieves First 6,000-Meter Summit; Everest Next Goal

A modified Unitree G1 humanoid robot, named Pemba, has successfully summited Ecuador's Chimborazo volcano at 6,310 meters, marking a historic first for humanoid robots reaching such a high altitude. The 16-hour expedition was organized by US startup Geologic Dome, founded by Pablo Berlanga Boemare. Pemba, equipped with specialized mountaineering gear and a custom cooling system for its batteries, utilized a combination of autonomous movement and human assistance on steeper sections. The robot's ascent, comparable in speed to human climbers on the final push, was part of a larger plan that includes summiting Mauna Kea and ultimately Mount Everest. Beyond the spectacle, the project aims to develop legged robots for environmental monitoring in challenging terrains. The team has submitted a research plan to Nepal for the Everest expedition.
