Bangladesh Reiterates Call for Rohingya Repatriation at UN, Citing Strain on Resources

Bangladesh has once again urged the United Nations for the swift repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, emphasizing that the displaced population wishes to return to their homeland. The prolonged Rohingya crisis has placed immense pressure on Bangladesh's resources and infrastructure. Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN, stated during a briefing on Myanmar that the crisis originated in Myanmar and its sustainable solution must be found there. He highlighted that Bangladesh has been hosting nearly 1.2 million forcibly displaced Rohingyas for nearly a decade, facing significant social, economic, environmental, and security challenges. The ambassador stressed the urgent need for a swift and sustainable resolution, calling for intensified diplomatic efforts from the international community and regional stakeholders to ensure safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable repatriation. He reiterated that Rohingyas themselves desire to return to Myanmar.
