EU Extends Sanctions Against Russia for First Time to One Year
Европската Унија донесе одлука за првпат да ги продолжи економските санкции против Русија за период од 12 месеци, наместо досегашната практика на продолжување на секои шест месеци. Одлуката ја потврди портпаролката на претседателот на Европскиот совет, која соопшти дека сите 27 земји-членки дале согласност за продолжување на рестриктивните мерки воведени по почетокот на руската инвазија врз Украина во 2022 година. In a significant policy shift, the European Union has decided to extend economic sanctions against Russia for a full year, departing from its previous six-month renewal cycle. This decision, confirmed by the spokesperson for the President of the European Council, received unanimous consent from all 27 member states. The restrictive measures, initially imposed following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, target key sectors of the Russian economy, including fossil fuel revenues, finance, and the military industry. Previously, these sanctions required semi-annual votes for renewal. Concurrently, Ukraine has received substantial political and financial support from the EU, including the initiation of formal accession talks and a €90 billion loan package.
This policy change signals a long-term commitment by the EU to maintain pressure on Russia and signals a strengthened strategic alignment with Ukraine.
