Breton Students Successfully Advocate for Math Exam in Native Language
Students at the Diwan high school in Vannes, Brittany, have achieved a significant victory in their pursuit of linguistic rights. For several months, these students, who are educated in Breton, had been requesting to take their Baccalaureate mathematics exam in their language of instruction. Initially, the regional education authority refused to grade papers submitted in Breton. However, following persistent advocacy and likely public attention, the rectorate has now reversed its decision. This marks a notable success for linguistic minority education in France. The students will now be able to complete their mathematics assessment in Breton.
This outcome represents a victory for linguistic diversity and minority language education within the French school system, potentially setting a precedent for future language rights claims.
