Santa Catarina has recorded its highest number of dead Magellanic penguins in 11 years, with 1,910 found deceased in 2026 as of June 19th, according to the Santos Basin Beach Monitoring Project (PMP-BS). This figure is the highest for the first half of the year since monitoring began in 2015. While some deaths are expected during migration, the current volume has alarmed researchers. The average number of deaths for June is typically around 1,200 to 1,300, with an average of 350. Approximately 90% of the deceased penguins are juveniles, often succumbing to exhaustion from their migration from Patagonia. Researchers are investigating the specific factors contributing to this year's unusually high mortality rate.
The significant increase in penguin deaths raises ecological concerns and prompts investigations into environmental factors affecting marine wildlife.
