Norway to Ban Generative AI for Primary School Students, Restrict Use for Older Students

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced on June 19th that the country will prohibit primary school students from using generative artificial intelligence tools to prevent negative impacts on learning. The government's plan outlines that students aged 6 to 13 will generally be forbidden from using AI tools. For students aged 14 to 16, the use of AI tools will be permitted only under strict teacher supervision. High school students, aged 17 to 19, will be taught how to use AI tools appropriately to prepare them for higher education and future careers. This policy aims to balance the integration of AI in education with the need to safeguard foundational learning.
