Some of Carisa’s beauty creations have become cult favourites. So what else is in her make-up bag?
Hourglass founder Carisa Janes is one of the most influential names in beauty. She shares her secrets.
Carisa Janes knows beauty. After stints at major players such as Urban Decay, in 2004 Janes launched Hourglass, which boasts several cult products, including its Veil primer and Ambient Lighting finishing powders.
She sold the brand to Unilever in 2017 for a rumoured $US250 million, but is still with the company. The brand made headlines in Australia earlier this year when it defected from Mecca to Sephora, and also launched a standalone presence in the market. During a recent trip to Australia, we caught up with Janes to learn about her beauty routine and upcoming projects.
What is your beauty mantra? Don’t spend too much time in front of the mirror; the more you look, the more you overthink.
What is your make-up routine? For day, I am always trying to achieve clean polished skin, so I use Hourglass Veil Hydrating Skin Tint ($68) for a natural balanced glow. My skin is not naturally even and I have rosacea, so when my skin needs a bit more coverage, I use a concealer on targeted areas to perfect and refine. Then, I add a soft, rosy cheek with Hourglass Unreal Liquid Blush ($66) for a diffused natural flush. For eyes, I use eyeshadow instead of liner during the day; I press a neutral tone along the lower lash line to add soft definition and dimension. Then, I finish with a few coats of mascara.
For night, I deepen the eye with Hourglass Voyeur Waterproof Gel Eyeliner in Cave ($49), and tightline with a bronze shade – it just makes your eyes pop.
What’s in your make-up bag? I am not someone who travels light, and make-up has always been a comfort for me, so I tend to bring my entire make-up bag. My non-negotiables are Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Concealer in Ecru ($66), a pressed powder; the 1.5mm Mechanical Gel Liner in Bronze and Canyon ($37 each); an eyebrow brush, the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette ($128), and a glossy balm.
What is your favourite fragrance? Something we are working on; it’s a secret for now.
What is your skincare routine? In the morning I like a gentle hydrating cleanse, such as Hourglass Equilibrium Cleansing Balm ($120). And I use Outside In Floral Reserve Face Oil ($127) and EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 ($151). At night, I double-cleanse: first with my balm, then I use Bioderma Sensibio Gel Moussant Soothing Foaming Cleanser ($22). I have recently started using the Lyma Laser ($4078) every night. I also use a retinol treatment and Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Peel Pads ($251) once a week to keep my skin bright. I finish with a cream and eye balm.
What does a typical day look like? Gym, then coffee, then into the office. T
