DAIMON Robotics Wants to Give Robot Hands a Sense of Touch

This article is brought to you by DAIMON Robotics . This April, Hong Kong-based DAIMON Robotics has released Daimon-Infinity , which it describes as the largest omni-modal robotic dataset for physical AI, featuring high resolution tactile sensing and spanning a wide range of tasks from folding laundry at home to manufacturing on factory assembly lines. The project is supported by collaborative efforts of partners across China and the globe, including Google DeepMind, Northwes

Hong Kong-based DAIMON Robotics has launched Daimon-Infinity, a substantial dataset designed to enhance the tactile sensing capabilities of robots. This initiative, supported by global collaborators including Google DeepMind and Northwestern University, aims to equip robotic hands with a sense of touch, moving beyond current vision-based manipulation models. The dataset features high-resolution tactile data across a wide array of tasks, from household chores to industrial assembly, and includes 10,000 hours of open-sourced information to accelerate embodied AI development.

DAIMON's approach, pioneered by co-founder Prof. Michael Yu Wang, introduces a Vision-Tactile-Language-Action (VTLA) architecture. This framework elevates tactile feedback to a level comparable with visual input, addressing a key limitation in current robotic dexterity. The company's advanced tactile sensor technology, packing over 110,000 sensing units into a small module, underpins this effort.

This development is significant as it could lead to robots capable of more nuanced and dexterous manipulation, opening up new possibilities for their application in diverse real-world environments.
