AI Processing of Earth Images Can Now Run in Space
AI image processing aboard satellites in space has been a goal of the Earth observation industry for years. Now it has finally been achieved. Planet Labs , based in Calif., released an image captured by its Pelican-4 multispectral satellite showing an airport in Alice Springs, Australia. On the tarmac, more than a dozen aircraft are scattered, each highlighted in a neat green box, identified by an AI model running aboard the satellite. Planet Labs’ engineers had worked 18 mon
Planet Labs has successfully demonstrated artificial intelligence processing of Earth imagery directly aboard a satellite in orbit. The company's Pelican-4 satellite captured an image of an Australian airport, with an onboard AI model autonomously identifying and boxing more than a dozen aircraft. This achievement, the result of 18 months of development, marks a significant advancement for the Earth observation industry.
Previously, vast amounts of satellite data required lengthy transmission to Earth for processing, leading to considerable delays in obtaining insights. This new capability allows for near real-time analysis, with AI algorithms processing images in fractions of a second using onboard GPUs.
This breakthrough enables faster, more responsive analysis of Earth observation data, which is crucial for time-sensitive applications like disaster response and environmental monitoring.
