NASA is working hard to predict where in Earth orbit its Swift space telescope will be this fall, so that a private spacecraft can meet up with the observatory and boost its altitude.
NASA is developing a swift strategy to extend the operational life of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The plan involves a robotic servicing mission to boost the space telescope's altitude, which is gradually decreasing. Engineers are currently testing the necessary robotic technology in simulated environments to ensure its readiness for the complex task of rendezvousing with and servicing the orbiting observatory.
This initiative aims to prolong the scientific capabilities of a valuable observatory that detects gamma-ray bursts and other high-energy cosmic events.
