Scientists just found a supercharged supernova — powered up by a magnetic star corpse
NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray spacecraft has observed a super-bright, supercharged supernova explosion powered up by the creation of a highly magnetic dead star, or magnetar.
Astronomers have detected an exceptionally bright supernova, a cosmic explosion far more powerful than typical events. This supercharged stellar blast is attributed to the formation of a magnetar, a type of neutron star with an incredibly strong magnetic field. The intense magnetic field is believed to be the energy source driving the supernova's extreme luminosity.
This discovery offers new insights into the extreme physics governing stellar death and the powerful forces unleashed by magnetars.
