A comprehensive global study analyzing the accounts of nearly 700 adult male child sexual abuse perpetrators has shed light on their justifications for such actions. The research, which synthesized data from 39 different studies, revealed a wide range of explanations offered by these individuals. Common themes included blaming external factors like substance abuse or childhood trauma, claiming a desire for novel sexual experiences, or asserting a false sense of romantic connection with the child.
A significant finding was the frequent attempt by perpetrators to portray child victims as consenting participants, often describing them as "flirtatious" or the instigators of the abuse. In other instances, perpetrators cited revenge against adult female partners as a motive, using the child as a means to retaliate against perceived failures in their partners' adherence to traditional gender roles or sexual compliance.
Understanding the rationalizations perpetrators use is crucial for developing more effective prevention strategies and interventions for child sexual abuse.
