From the outset, the Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa (NEISA) was designed to bring together leaders, experts and partners to advance Africa’s nuclear energy goals. The strong participation at the summit this year reflects a growing consensus that the future of our economies depends on how quickly we solve the energy challenge. African nations are prioritizing stable energy supplies as a crucial driver for industrial expansion and economic competitiveness. Rwanda, aiming for operational nuclear energy by the early 2030s, sees nuclear power, particularly small modular reactors, as vital for meeting the growing energy demands of modern industries and digital infrastructure. While acknowledging the importance of renewables like solar and hydro, leaders at the Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa (NEISA) stressed that intermittent sources alone are insufficient for efficient economic functioning. The summit emphasized the need for coordinated efforts in regulation, financing, and regional power integration to overcome investor hesitancy and attract capital for large-scale energy projects.

Ensuring a reliable and abundant energy supply is fundamental for Africa to industrialize, harness its demographic potential, and compete in the global economy.
