Soft mode origin of charge ordering in superconducting kagome CsV3Sb5

Charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity coexist in the kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A=K, Cs, Rb), raising fundamental questions about the mechanisms driving their intertwined phases. Here we combine high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering with first-principles calculations to uncover the origin of CDW formation in CsV3Sb5. Guided by structure factor analysis, we identify a soft phonon mode along the reciprocal M-L direction, with the strongest effect at the L point,

Researchers have investigated the coexistence of charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity in the kagome metal CsV3Sb5. Using advanced X-ray scattering techniques and theoretical calculations, they pinpointed a specific "soft" phonon mode as the primary driver for the formation of the CDW.

This instability, located at a particular point in the material's reciprocal space known as the L point, was further supported by computational models that included lattice vibrations and electron interactions. The findings clarify the fundamental cause of the CDW in this material.

Understanding the origin of charge ordering is crucial for developing new superconducting materials with potentially enhanced properties.
