LP faction unveils presidential candidate

The Labour Party on Saturday formally presented Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, following what it described as a broad-based consensus among party members and stakeholders. This was disclosed in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa. The move comes hours after a faction of the party led by Julius Abure reportedly adopted its National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, as a parallel presidential candidate. The 42-year-old party stalwart was said to have been adopted during the faction’s presidential, governorship and House of Representatives primaries held in Abuja, highlighting renewed internal tensions within the opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections. However, Asogwa maintained that the decision was affirmed by its leadership, which described Okereke as a reform-driven intellectual with strong credentials in governance and public policy. He currently leads the ERGAF-AFRICA Legislative Governance Innovation and Policy Hub, a policy and legislative research institution, and also serves as legislative consultant to key committees and ranking members of the National Assembly.
