Thousands of homes are without power across Western Australia's south including Perth, after an intense storm crossed the coast overnight, but residents have been warned the worst of the weather is yet to come.

About 8,000 homes in the South West and a further 2,000 in the Perth metropolitan area were affected by the outages.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services received 120 calls for assistance, with most coming from Perth for fallen trees, roof damage and water ingress.

A significant cold front swept through the region overnight, with Cape Leeuwin recording the strongest wind gust of 117 kilometres an hour just before 6am this morning.

Parts of Perth have experienced minor flooding, including Riverside Drive in the Perth CBD and Claisebrook Cove in East Perth.

The city received 19.6 millimetres of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Busselton Airport recorded 51mm up to 9am, with high tides submerging the horseshoe jetty, an enclosed swimming space next to the iconic Busselton Jetty.

Naturaliste Volunteer Marine Rescue skipper Brett Ladhams said the yacht was rescued before the storm.

"[The owners] were hoping the yacht would ride out the storm, but they didn't want to be on board," he said.

Mr Ladhams said the yacht had been pushed a significant distance.

"[The yacht] has come inshore from about 300 metres off the shore and probably another 500 metres up the beach," he said.

"To break a mooring, wind and wave action will tear rope and chain and things like that.

"The lucky thing was there was only really one yacht in the bay … there's often still two dozen boats in the bay and that causes a lot of damage."
