Police are investigating a fatal house fire in Werribee, in Melbourne's south-west.

One person died and another suffered serious injuries in the blaze in Newbury Street.

Police have not released any information about the age of the victim.

Emergency services were called to a house in Newbury Street, Werribee, just after midnight.

Victoria Police said a resident of the home died and a 40-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious burns.

Fire Rescue Victoria said crews arrived at the scene within three minutes of the blaze being reported to find the house fully involved with fire.

Police say the circumstances of the fire are being investigated, and an arson chemist will attend the scene.
