Live: Joyce defends Hanson's record as One Nation leader says she has 'ability' to be PM

Barnaby Joyce has defended his leader's parliamentary attendance record after Pauline Hanson came under fire for not showing up to Senate estimates last week. Follow live.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has accused One Nation and the Coalition of seeking to "benefit" from people's "legitimate concerns" about the economy.

Meanwhile, Pauline Hanson says she has the ability to lead the nation as prime minister but admits she was shocked by a poll that suggested One Nation had pulled ahead of Labor.

Liberal frontbencher Andrew Hastie has joined Afternoon Briefing where he's been asked about opinion polling showing a rise in support for One Nation.

A Redbridge/Ascent poll published in the Australian Financial Review shows One Nation surpassing Labor with a 31 per cent primary vote. It also shows the Coalition at 20 per cent.

The shadow industry minister has questioned why One Nation Leader Pauline Hanson has been absent from Senate estimates hearings over the last decade.

Hanson has said she has the "ability" to be prime minister, but Hastie has questioned whether the One Nation has the "drive" and energy" to lead the nation given her attendance record.

"Her job as a senator is to hold the government to account," Hastie says.

"She was having birthday cake with a billionaire in Brisbane when she should have been asking questions of the government on behalf of her battlers who have just experienced one of the worst budgets in the last three decades."
