Researchers have developed a new on-chip system for generating and detecting microwave signals at cryogenic temperatures, potentially simplifying complex quantum experiments. This system utilizes DC-operated Josephson junction arrays (JJAs) fabricated with superconducting materials like MoGe or NbTiN. These JJAs can emit C-band frequency signals with a narrow linewidth and measurable power, and can also detect microwave radiation. The performance of these JJAs can be tuned by factors such as temperature, magnetic field, current, and device design.
This innovation offers a more compact and potentially less expensive alternative to current high-frequency circuitry needed for quantum applications.
