Nine golden jackals have been found electrocuted at an open field at Nayathode near the Cochin international airport in Ernakulam, Kerala.
The carcasses of the animals were found by the owner of the holding on Monday (June 29, 2026). The animals are suspected to have died from electric shock caused by a snapped Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) power line. The owner of the holding escaped unhurt, according to Forest officials.
It appears to be a case of accidental electrocution from the power line. However, a case would be booked in connection with the incident, a senior forest official said.
Golden jackals, included in Schedule One of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, are commonly found in Kerala and are listed in the Least Concern category, considering their population abundance, global distribution and conservation challenges. They are considered “proficient scavengers.” They also hunt small mammals, rodents, hares, birds, and insects, according to wildlife experts.
