Two-Thirds of Capital Area Road Resurfacing Already Completed

Road crews have completed around two-thirds of this year’s planned resurfacing on the capital area’s state road network after a spell of favourable weather accelerated work during the early summer. According to contractor Colas Iceland, around 8,000 tonnes of asphalt—covering roughly 80,000 square metres—have already been laid on behalf of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. Around 40,000 square metres remain before the programme is complete. What’s the Story? Orig

Major Summer Investment Reykjavík City expects to spend just over ISK 1 billion on resurfacing projects this summer. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration has allocated more than ISK 600 million for maintenance on roads under its responsibility within the capital area, in addition to ISK 85 million for repairs. Birgir Blöndahl Arngrímsson, a project manager at Colas Iceland, said weather conditions had allowed crews to make an unusually strong start to the season. He said some roads had emerged from the winter in particularly poor condition, with deep ruts cutting through existing asphalt layers and creating potential hazards for drivers. Although resurfacing work inevitably causes temporary road closures and diversions, Birgir said most motorists accept the disruption. He added that workers have occasionally faced verbal abuse from frustrated drivers, but described those incidents as the exception rather than the norm.
