‘Supergirl’ Has a Not-So-Strong Start In Theaters

A more split than usual reception has hurt the new 'Supergirl' movie more than its sizable cinematic competition has.

2026’s first superhero movie has arrived with Supergirl, and that means it’s time to talk opening weekend numbers.

Per Deadline, the second DC Universe flick made $68 million worldwide, with over half of that coming from the domestic market. Having missed projections of $50 million domestic, the immediate comparison point is 2024’s Joker: Folie à Deux, which opened to a low $37.8 million in North America. Kara Zor-El’s first solo feature in decades comes in slightly below that, affected globally by rising heat in some territories and the World Cup going on. Producer Peter Safran already kind of conceded, since he acknowledged the weak open to the New York Times, but countered there’s still “a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”

Plan or not, this film wasn’t helped by a pretty mixed reception. Some like it, some really don’t, others think it’s blandly inoffensive. Beyond an online hate campaign that’s been brewing against it for months, it’s a general consensus that Milly Alcock’s doing the best she can while the film otherwise lets her down. On the bright side, she’s already set for 2027’s Man of Tomorrow, so maybe she’ll make a better impression there.

With Supergirl not hitting big, Toy Story 5 raked in more and more money. It made $159.1 million worldwide in its second weekend, bringing its global total to $585 million. It seems like it could join the billion dollar club in no time…provided Minions & Monsters doesn’t kill its momentum on Wednesday. The Illumination threequel is July’s first big theatrical movie, later followed by Evil Dead Burn and the Moana remake (July 10), The Odyssey (July 17), Her Private Hell and Motor City (July 24), and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31).
