Scanty rainfall has become a cause of concern among farmers of Yadgir district who have already carried out weed-removing activities in young cotton, green gram and red gram crops and are waiting for a good spell of rainfall for the survival of crops.

According to information provided by the department concerned, except Wadagera and Hunsagi taluks, the other four taluks, Yadgir, Shahapur, Shorapur and Gurmitkal, have not received a good spell of rainfall till now.

Shahapur taluk has received 96.7 mm of rainfall against the actual rainfall of 122.3 mm, while Shorapur taluk has received 70.4 mm against a normal of 92.8 mm, Yadgir taluk 67.4 mm (127.8mm) and Gurmitkal taluk- 58.4 mm (104.8 mm).

And Wadagera and Hunsagi taluks have received sufficient rainfall. Gurmitkal taluk has received 102.7 mm (79.2 mm) and Hunsagi taluk 105.8 mm (66.5 mm).

Meanwhile, farmers have completed sowing operations in 1,63,922 hectares (till June 25), even as a sowing target of 401,869 hectares has been set by the Agriculture Department for the Kharif season.

Cotton, which is a major crop, is facing a serious threat of withering if it does not rain shortly.

“We are really worried about the continued dry spell. The land is getting dry due to winds, though weed-removing activities in cotton, green gram and red gram crops were carried out recently’,” farmer Vijay Gulagi said.

The area covered so far is 1,22,475 hectares of cotton against a target of 2,02,452 hectares. Greengram 8,121 hectares (13,777 hectares) and red gram 32,885 hectares (84,999 hectares).

“Sowing activities in the rest of the uncovered area are also likely to be hit if the dry spell continues in the coming days. Meanwhile, there was a scattered rainfall late on Sunday evening, which, however, did not make much difference,” another farmer Amareshwarswamy said.
