A quarrel that started over bursting of crackers during a bull procession organised as part of Kara Hunnime (Full Moon Day) escalated and led to a group clash resulting in injuries to six people at Naregal village of Hangal taluk in Haveri district on Monday.
Following the group clash, tension prevailed in the village.
Hangal Police immediately reached the village and brought the situation under control.
Superintendent of Police of Haveri district Yashoda Vantagodi visited Naregal village and reviewed the situation.
Additional police forces have been deployed in the village as a precautionary measure.
Those injured in the clash have been identified as Lohit Kurubar, Shivaraj Kurubar, Nagappa Kurubar, Jayappa Kurubar, Ningaraj Kurubar, Mallappa Kodamaggi, Khaja Goundi and Bashasab Goundi.
The injured were treated at Hangal Taluk Hospital. And, three among them were shifted to KMCRI Hospital in Hubballi for further treatment.
According to the police, bull calves decorated for the Kara Hunnime festival were being taken out in a procession when crackers were burst near the village mosque leading to a verbal duel.
While one version is that initially, a verbal duel broke out between Lohit Kurbar and Khaja Goundi, escalating into a fight resulting in Lohit being attacked with a betelnut slicing sickle. Subsequently, when Lohit’s kin questioned Khaja and his father Bhashasab, they too were attacked with a sickle, resulting in another fight and injuries to eight people.
The other version is that the clash broke out soon after the crackers were burst and two groups attacked each other.
