A 30-year-old woman and her newborn baby were found dead in a lodge room in Thrissur city on Tuesday, with the police launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The deceased was identified as Jyothi, a native of Edamuttam near Thriprayar. The bodies were found in a lodge in Veliyannur.
According to the police, Jyothi had checked into the lodge on June 27. She is suspected to have delivered the baby inside the room. The exact cause and time of death will be determined after the post-mortem examination.
The room remained locked from inside, and when there was no response despite repeated attempts to contact the woman, the lodge staff alerted the police. Fire and Rescue Services personnel and the police reached the spot and broke open the door, finding the woman and the newborn dead inside.
An autorickshaw driver, who had accompanied Jyothi when she checked into the lodge, has been taken into custody for questioning. According to the police, the man stated that he knew Jyothi and had helped her book the room. He also told investigators that he had purchased medicines for her after she complained of stomach pain and that he was unable to contact her when he tried calling on Monday.
Police said the man’s statements were being verified as part of the investigation. They are also examining the circumstances that led to the woman’s stay at the lodge, the delivery, and the deaths. The lodge staff say they didn’t know that the woman was pregnant. The bodies have been shifted for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is under way.
