AI is all about building Gigawatts on Earth or in Space faster and powering millions of AI chips with them to deliver more AI tokens and more powerful AI.
Tesla and SpaceX are not just consumers of power — they are becoming active shapers of the grid through hardware scale, software intelligence (Autobidder), aggregation (VPP), and willingness to fund infrastructure. This hybrid model (batteries + rapid gas + optimized software + co-located renewables) is one of the fastest ways to deliver the gigawatts of firm, flexible power these sites require while improving grid stability overall.
Tesla is able shape the Grid on Earth. Tesla signed a deal with Sunrun to get control of 16 Gigawatts of solar power and 4+ gigawatts of residential battery storage. Tesla runs autobidder which helps utilities get more money bidding energy from battery storage. Tesla AutoBidder is Tesla’s real-time trading and control platform for energy storage assets (primarily Megapacks at utility scale and Powerwalls in homes). It uses machine learning, forecasting, and optimization algorithms to automatically buy and sell electricity in wholesale markets to maximize revenue for battery owners while supporting grid stability.
Tesla has a direct connection to grid operators. AutoBidder interfaces directly with ISO/RTO systems via APIs. This gives Tesla real-time access to Locational Marginal Prices (LMPs) at thousands of specific nodes on the grid, Ancillary service requirements and prices, Real-time frequency, reserve margins, and congestion data. Day-ahead and real-time market signals.
AutoBidder is Tesla’s real-time AI trading and dispatch platform. When combined with VPP aggregation, it gives Tesla dispatchable control over distributed solar + storage assets across wide areas. When paired with fast-deploy gas solutions (APR Energy, Doosan Turbines, Rapid Megapack installations). Tesla and SpaceX can ensure a utility can provide another 150 MW or Gigawatt in locations where SpaceXAI has positioned an expanding AI data center.
Elon bought APR Energy days ago and APR has 1.1 GW of already built with about 40 25-35MW turbines. They can build 10-20+ more by the end of 2027 with additional funding from Elon and SpaceX.
The key part for the APR Energy units are supplies of GE TM2500 and Mitsubishi FT8 used in APR Energy systems. TM2500 or FT8 backlogs aeroderivative/mobile variants are among the more accessible options with lead times measured in weeks to ~12–18 months vs. years for big GE gas turbines.
Elon now owns APR Energy which has 1.1 GW of already built 25-35MW turbines. The
