Vucic: Gendarmerie important for defense

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Tuesday that the Gendarmerie is important for the defense of the country.

Speaking at a demonstration of the elite police unit’s capabilities at the Lipovica Base outside Belgrade, Vucic told senior commanders that keeping the unit’s numbers high is important.

Director of Police Dragan Vasiljevic responded by denying reports of troopers quitting the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ) in large numbers.

Gendarmerie commander Colonel Radoslav Repac said that 1,300 people applied for 170 positions in his unit with 183 getting through the tests.
