A woman credits "divine intervention" for her survival after a tree hit her car while travelling along a WA highway during a huge storm.

Southern WA's strongest weather system in 49 years brought severe weather, felling trees and power lines across the state.

A Margaret River woman has shared her incredible tale of survival after a tree fell on her moving car on a major highway in Western Australia's South West.

Lauren Healy was driving at 110 kilometres per hour on Bussell Highway near Metricup, 250 kilometres south of Perth, during WA's severe storm on Sunday afternoon when a large tree limb landed on the bonnet of her grey SUV.

"I remember seeing the tree start to fall in front of me, and I just remember being really calm, strangely enough.

"And just having almost this voice that just said, 'Brace yourself, you're going to be fine.'"

Ms Healy managed to crawl out of the wreckage with no obvious injuries and credits "divine intervention" for her survival.

The mother of two said her main concern was not for herself, but for her two sons, aged 18 and 16.

Ms Healy said she was the sole parent to her sons after her husband died five years ago.

"I just wanted to make sure I was OK for [my sons]," Ms Healy said.

"My boys, they were very close to being without any parents.

Ms Healy's crash is the second confirmed account of a tree falling onto moving cars along Bussell Highway during the weekend's storm, south of Busselton.

On Sunday afternoon, a couple in their 70s was taken to Busselton Health Campus with minor injuries.

Both incidents occurred as Perth and parts of Western Australia's south were being lashed by abnormally destructive weather conditions as a severe storm intensified on Sunday evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded 135km/h wind gusts at Cape Naturaliste, setting a new wind speed record for May.

Ms Healy said she was still processing the traumatic incident and just how close she came to tragedy.

"I'm just very grateful and certainly won't be out on the road in those sort of conditions ever again."
