Media mogul Antony Catalano has had his bail conditions changed to allow him to travel interstate to see his wife, who he is accused of attacking in March.

The 59-year-old has been charged with making threats to kill, assault and false imprisonment.

Media executive Antony Catalano's bail conditions have been varied, allowing him to travel to Byron Bay to see his wife, who he is accused of bashing earlier this year.

Mr Catalano, 59, is facing charges including assault, false imprisonment and making threats to kill over the March incident.

Mr Catalano today faced the Melbourne Magistrates' Court to apply to have his bail varied, allowing him to leave Victoria and travel to Byron Bay where his wife, Stefanie, is living with four children.

Under the new terms, he will be able to spend time with them.

The variation application was not opposed by police or a lawyer acting for Ms Catalano.

Mr Catalano is accused of dragging his wife through their luxury St Kilda apartment, swinging a clothes iron at her head and causing a fractured tailbone on March 13.

Prosecutors said large sections of the alleged attack, which lasted about an hour, were captured on security cameras in the apartment complex.

When details of the case became public, Mr Catalano was stood down as chair of Australian Community Media, which publishes dozens of regional newspapers.

He issued a public apology and checked himself into rehab for mental health and drug addiction issues.

Last month, Mr Catalano resigned his directorship of 20 Cashews Pty Ltd, an entity that owns Australian Community Media. He also resigned from 19 Cashews Pty Ltd, which has a stake in Southern Cross Media. Mr Catalano's son, Jordan Catalano, was appointed in his place.

Mr Catalano appeared via video link today from an undisclosed location, wearing a suit and tie.
