Forest Department officials on Wednesday rescued a wild elephant that was trapped in a railway barricade near Arekoppa village in Kanakapura taluk.
The elephant, which had ventured from the Boni Hekkalu forest area in the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary to nearby farmland in search of food during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, got stuck between the iron pillars of a railway barricade erected in the area to mitigate human-elephant conflict.
Forest officials said the elephant got trapped while returning to the forest and was unable to move. Villagers spotted the animal in the early hours of Wednesday and immediately alerted the Forest Department officials.
Upon receiving the information, the Deputy Conservator of Forests of the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, along with senior officials of the Kanakapura Wildlife Sub-Division, Bannerghatta Elephant Task Force personnel, and veterinarians, visited the spot to rescue the elephant. After administering anaesthesia to the elephant, the railway track was cut, and the elephant was rescued. It was thereafter treated for injuries.
The elephant was kept under observation and upon its recovery was released into the forest.
