The Rayalaseema Steel Plant (RSP) construction works are scheduled to be launched by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at Sunnapurallapalle village of Jammalamadugu mandal in Kadapa district on July 3 (Friday).

RSP is an integrated steel plant being established by the JSW Group, and if the project makes the desired progress, it will begin commercial production in April 2029.

According to official sources, this is a greenfield steel plant planned to be developed in two phases with a total production capacity of 2 Million Tons Per Annum (MTPA), with an overall investment of ₹16,350 crore (₹4,500 crore on 1 MTPA in Phase-I and ₹11,850 crore in the second phase).

The product line for Phase-I comprises universal beams, parallel beams and universal columns and channels with the potential to generate employment for 1,000 people.

The RSP is proposed to be set up in over 1,100 acres and an additional 200 acres have been identified for the development of a township.

A striking feature of the Phase-I of the project is installation of an advanced electric arc furnace, which is cost-efficient and environment-friendly compared to a conventional, energy-intensive blast furnace that operates with massive quantities of coking coal. It will have a ladle furnace, vacuum degasser and other machinery.

The State government has extended the tailor-made incentives for up to 50% of the fixed capital investment and is facilitating the laying of a 400 kV power transmission line and providing 2 tmcft annual water supply, 12-km road connectivity to NH-67 and a 12-km railway siding connecting the plant to the Proddatur–Yerraguntla line.

The State government and the JSW Group have resolved to do the machinery erection by November 2028 and start production in April 2029.

As far as steel making technology is concerned, there is a chance of the JSW Group roping in the JFE Steel Corporation of Japan, with which it has a tie-up in its other steel manufacturing ventures in India.
