Hundreds of Congress leaders, workers and members of the public paid their last respects to former Manalur MLA and senior Congress leader P.A. Madhavan at the District Congress Committee (DCC) office in Thrissur on Wednesday (July 1, 2026).

Mr. Madhavan, 80, died at a private hospital in Ernakulam on Tuesday while undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in a road accident near Mundur in February, 2026.

His mortal remains were later taken to his residence at Mundur, where the public will be able to pay homage till 12.30 p.m. on Thursday. The cremation will be held at 2 p.m. at the Paramekkavu Santhi Ghat.

Mr. Madhavan represented the Manalur Assembly constituency from 2011 to 2016. He defeated the Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s Baby John.

He began his public life at the age of 13 during the Vimochana Samaram and went on to hold several positions in the Youth Congress, the Indian National Congress and the Thrissur DCC. A licensed document writer since 1967, he remained active in public life throughout his career and was widely regarded as a grassroots leader.

Several senior Congress leaders, including Ministers and legislators, condoled his death.

Condoling his death, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K.C. Venugopal said Mr. Madhavan had made invaluable contributions to strengthening the Congress organisation and taking its ideals to the people. He described him as a leader who upheld simplicity and human values in public life and played a key role in reinforcing the party’s organisational base in Thrissur.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph said the Congress had lost a leader who had devoted decades to building the party and was admired for his humility and close engagement with people.

Senior Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran described the veteran leader’s death as a painful loss, recalling his relentless travels across the district to strengthen the organisation and his ability to earn the affection of party workers
