News24 | Wednesday’s weather: Risk of floods as heavy rain, snow and strong winds hit 3 provinces

The South African Weather Service has issued multiple warnings for disruptive rain, which may lead to flooding in parts of the Northern Cape, Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.

Snow, strong winds and waves are also expected in some parts of the three provinces until Thursday, while fine and warm conditions are forecast for most of the country.

Yellow Level 4 warning: Wind and waves leading to difficulty in navigation at sea, as well as small vessels taking on water, are expected between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay until Thursday.

Yellow Level 2 warning: Damaging waves leading to small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing, as well as difficulty in navigation, are expected between Plettenberg Bay and East London until Thursday.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation. SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, level 5 is medium and Level 4 is low.

Gauteng: Fine in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and cool but warm in the extreme north.

Mpumalanga: Partly cloudy and cool, but warm in the Lowveld.

Limpopo: Partly cloudy and cool, but warm in the east. It will be fine in the northern parts.

North West: Partly cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south-west. It will be windy in the western parts.

Free State: Partly cloudy and cold to cool with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the west, where it will be windy. It will become cloudy in the afternoon in the south.

Northern Cape: Morning fog is expected along the coast and adjacent interior, otherwise partly cloudy, windy and cold to cool with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the south-east. No rainfall is expected in the north-eastern parts, but light snowfall is expected over the southern high-lying areas.

The wind along the coast will be moderate north-westerly to westerly, becoming south-westerly from the afternoon.
