Police investigate two suspicious Melbourne house fires

Police are investigating two suspicious house fires that started minutes apart in neighbouring suburbs in Melbourne's north.

Fire crews were called to an empty house in Keilor Downs, which sustained significant damage.

Three people evacuated a house in nearby Taylors Lakes after fires in two vehicles spread to the property.

Police are investigating two suspicious house fires that started just minutes apart in neighbouring suburbs, in Melbourne's north.

Emergency services were called to a property in Morecambe Crescent, Keilor Downs, about 2:45am to reports of a house on fire.

Fire Rescue Victoria said more than 20 firefighters worked on the blaze at the single-storey brick house.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, which was brought under control in about 30 minutes.

Victoria Police said the fire was suspicious and caused significant damage to the property.

Just 15 minutes after the Keilor Downs fire was reported, fire crews were called to a property in Taylors Lakes, less than two kilometres away.

Fire Rescue Victoria said two cars in a carport at the property in Pindari Avenue were on fire when crews arrived, and the blaze had spread to the house.

Three people inside the house at the time of the fire evacuated and were not hurt.

Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading to nearby houses.

Victoria Police said the fire was suspicious and an investigation is underway.

Police said they were not treating the fires as linked at this stage.
