Pedestrians 'fortunate to be alive' after truck loses load on highway

A truck lost its load on the North-South Motorway in Adelaide's north today, sending two 15-tonne concrete slabs onto the road and into parked cars.

The truck involved in the incident was a private contractor transporting concrete segments for the T2D Project.

Transportation of concrete segments for the T2D Project has been suspended until further notice. Investigations into the crash are ongoing.

Two pedestrians were "lucky to be alive" after a truck lost its load on the North-South Motorway north of Adelaide, police say.

Police said the incident occurred when vehicles merged into the southbound lane in front of a truck laden with concrete slabs just after 10:30am on Friday.

Footage released by SA Police shows the truck losing its load, sending two 15-tonne concrete segments onto the roadway, near Bolivar.

The slabs then impacted three cars parked on the side of the road.

"Two pedestrians were standing next to a broken-down vehicle on the shoulder of the road and were struck by the parked cars," a police spokesperson said.

"One of the pedestrians was taken to hospital by ambulance with a suspected broken arm. Two other people sustained minor injuries.

"Police are amazed that no one was killed during this incident."

Heavy Vehicle Enforcement Unit officers attended and examined the scene and vehicles.

A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure and Transport said the truck involved in the incident was a private contractor transporting concrete segments for the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project.

The department reported the incident to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

"Out of an abundance of caution, transportation of concrete segments has been suspended until further notice," the spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure and Transport said.

"This temporary suspension will have no impact on delivery timelines or budget for the T2D Project."

Police said the incident was a reminder for motorists to allow heavy vehicles the space and stopping distance they need.

"Drivers transporting loads must ensure they are properly secured before commencing their journey," police said.
