The Papers: 'Race against time' and 'We've lost a Goodie'

Wildfires raging through France and Spain lead the front pages of several papers. "Race against time" says the i Paper, next to a photo of a French firefighter standing in front of a burning row of trees and tall grass. French President Emmanuel Macron "holds crisis meeting" and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warns of the "consequence of climate emergency", the paper reports. Meanwhile, "UK fire crews braced for wildfires" the paper adds, "as fourth heatwave looms this week".

"Race to contain wildfires before new heatwave" echoes the Independent in its headline as "flames race closer to Bordeaux" in south-west France. "Forecasters warn another spell of 40C heat" could sweep across western Europe later this week, according to the paper.

"Wall of flame" writes the Financial Times in its front page coverage of the European inferno. Elsewhere in UK politics, the papers says Prime Minister Andy Burnham "is preparing to tell schools to tailor their curriculum to the needs to local employers as he pushes to get more young people into work," citing insiders familiar with the plans.

The Times refers to the rejigged curriculum proposal as "Burnham's 'hard hat' schools", saying that "children as young as 14 will be encouraged into technical training rather than academic education". A photo on the front page shows a fire raging near Madrid.

"Hard hats 'as important as graduation caps'," is the Daily Telegraph's take on Burnham's mooted education reforms, perceiving it as an "axe" to former Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair's "vision" of "50 per cent target for university attendance". Elsewhere, Burnham is captured standing side-by-side with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Portsmouth on Monday, under the caption "Brothers in arms".

"Teach pupils for local jobs, Burnham to tell schools", the Guardian writes. "Tributes as Goodies' Bill Oddie dies at 85," it reports, next to a photo of the beaming late comedian and naturalist, one of three members of the tandem bike-riding members of the 1970s trio the Goodies.

"We've lost a Goodie & a bestie," the Daily Star says, as the BBC presenter Chris Packham leads "tribute to Springwatch star", referring to the programme which Bill Oddie hosted on the BBC until 2009.
