Delta urges communities to protect power assets

The Delta State Government has urged communities benefiting from power projects to protect electricity infrastructure provided by the state. The Commissioner for Energy, Michael Anoka, made the appeal when leaders of Utagba-Ogbe community paid him a courtesy visit in Asaba. While lamenting the rampant vandalism of electricity facilities across the state, the Commissioner listed “cables, transformers, solar batteries and other equipment among infrastructure frequently targeted by vandals”. He disclosed that “the state government had committed substantial resources to securing and maintaining electricity infrastructure”. He explained that several engineering considerations must be addressed before the execution of any electrification project. Anoka noted that vandalism and deliberate sabotage have imposed huge financial costs on the government. He warned those involved in vandalism to desist or face the consequences of their actions. The commissioner appealed to community leaders and residents to partner the government in protecting public assets. He said the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori remains committed to expanding infrastructure across the state. Anoka stressed that communities must play an active role in safeguarding electricity facilities from saboteurs. Leader of the delegation, Mr. Godwin Edeme, assured the government that the community would do everything within its power to protect electricity infrastructure in the area.
