The factional National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Agbo Major, on Thursday, expressed concerns over ongoing disputes surrounding the party’s leadership and structure, warning that unresolved issues could affect democratic processes ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a world press conference in Abuja, Major said the NNPP remained committed to the rule of law and constitutional procedures in handling matters relating to membership, discipline and leadership within the party. He said, “The New Nigeria Peoples Party is a law-abiding political organisation guided by its constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “Decisions relating to membership, discipline and leadership are governed by established procedures and not by the personal interests of any individual.” The NNPP chairman said the party had observed what it described as attempts to create confusion regarding its legitimate leadership, despite legal developments and judicial pronouncements on the matter. “Our position remains clear and consistent. We are particularly concerned that despite various legal developments and judicial pronouncements relating to the affairs of our party, there are still attempts to accord recognition to individuals and groups whose status within the NNPP remains a subject of serious dispute,” he said. Agbo stressed the need for institutions responsible for safeguarding democracy to remain impartial and committed to the rule of law. “It is our belief that institutions entrusted with safeguarding democracy must remain neutral, impartial and faithful to the rule of law. Democracy can only flourish when public institutions operate without fear or favour,” he stated. Major further maintained that some individuals claiming to represent the party no longer spoke for its recognized leadership and called for an objective review of issues affecting the party’s internal cohesion. “The NNPP maintains that certain individuals who continue to parade themselves as representatives of the party no longer speak for the legitimate leadership of the organization,” he said. Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, the NNPP chairman urged political actors and groups considering alliances to address internal issues transparently. “As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 General Elections, political actors must understand that actions taken today will have far-reaching consequences for the future of our democracy.
