A homeless man has been stabbed in an attack in the regional city of Bendigo overnight.

Detectives have reviewed CCTV and are searching for the offenders.

Detectives are investigating a stabbing attack on a homeless man in Bendigo overnight.

Police say four teenagers set upon the 41-year-old in Bath Lane and stabbed him.

The injured man, who had been living on the streets of the regional city, then stumbled into the Sporting Globe pub on Hargreaves Street and collapsed, about 9pm.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene and then taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Detective Acting Sergeant Justin Ludeman said the alleged attack was "extremely cowardly".

"This male is just going about his everyday business and he appears to have just been set upon by these males," he said.

"Any member of the public just going about their day-to-day business to be seemingly [the victim of an] unprovoked attack is disturbing."

He said police were searching for the teens, but there was no ongoing threat to the public.

"The nature, the style of offending, attempting to cover their identity, I understand that would put fear into the general public but police are conducting reassurance controls, and we believe it is an isolated incident," he said.

"This has been a trend for a significant amount of time, but Victoria Police continue to do what they can to hold offenders to account."

"Because, you know, I'm running the shop till late every night. It's very dangerous."

Mr Ahn said that violence in the regional city had increased in recent years.

In a statement, the sports bar management said their staff acted immediately, contacting emergency services and initiating first aid.

"An incident of this nature is entirely unprecedented in our venue and the surrounding area, which has always been a safe and welcoming environment.

"We are fully cooperating with Victoria Police and will continue to provide any support they
