The Bidhannagar Municipality Corporation Mayor handed in their resignation on Thursday (June 4, 2026), just a day after Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor quit his role. However, the KMC officials are yet to accept the resignation of Firhad Hakim as the KMC mayor.

The BMC Mayor and senior Trinamool Congress leader Krishna Chakraborty, resigned from her post; she cited personal reasons for the move.

“I have resigned as the mayor. I will continue to work as a councillor. I want to spend some time for myself... I have been in this chair for the past 16 years,” Ms Chakraborty told media persons. She also added that she has worked for the people since a young age, and she will continue to do so even after resigning as the Mayor.

Sharadwat Mukherjee, the Bharatiya Janta Party MLA from Bidhannagar accused that Ms. Chakraborty of sitting on a bed of money for the past many years. “We have listed over 18-19 properties linked to her, the guest houses that run under her. She must be ashamed if people find out. That is why she is going behind the curtains now,” Mr Chakraborty said.

This comes as a major development as multiple top stakeholders in the Trinamool Congress are changing sides, deflecting from the party, facing violence, arrests, and two have also faced an expulsion.

On Wednesday (June 3, 2026), Mr Hakim handed in his resignation after serving as the mayor of KMC for almost seven years. Senior TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh said that Mr Hakim wanted a dignified exit as the KMC was made defunct by the current State government.

On Thursday (June 4, 2026), KMC chairperson and senior TMC leader Mala Ray said that they are calling a house meeting at the KMC on June 19. The previous house meeting on May 22 had to be cancelled after an impasse between the KMC secretary and TMC councillors left the situation in a state of turmoil.

However, his move has come under criticism by the West Bengal government, as Mr Hakim waits for his resignation to be accepted. Senior Bharatiya Janta Party leader
