The Government Railway Police (GRP) have launched an investigation after the mutilated torso of an unidentified man was discovered inside a suitcase at Perambur railway station in Chennai on Friday (June 5, 2026) morning. Efforts are under way to establish the victim’s identity.

According to police, commuters noticed a blue suitcase lying unattended near the staircase leading to Platform No. 4 at around 7.15 a.m. Suspecting something unusual after detecting a foul smell from the bag, they alerted the railway police personnel.

A GRP team rushed to the spot, opened the suitcase, and found the torso of a man stuffed inside. The victim’s head, arms, and legs were missing, indicating the body had been dismembered.

Preliminary investigations suggest the murder and dismemberment may have taken place elsewhere, as there were no visible signs of blood leakage from the suitcase. Police suspect the remains were transported to the station and abandoned there.

The body has been sent to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Investigators are scrutinising CCTV footage from the railway station and nearby areas to trace those responsible for the crime. Police are also verifying missing persons complaints and coordinating with police stations across Chennai and neighbouring districts to identify the deceased.

A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.
