JK champions GPE3’s global efforts to secure funding for education

PARIS: THE former Tanzanian President, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, has continued to champion global efforts to secure funding for education, leading a key meeting of the Board of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) aimed at mobilising 15bn US dollars by 2030 to support vulnerable children worldwide. The meeting, held in Paris on June 3 and 4, 2026, discussed the GPE 2030 fundraising campaign, which seeks to strengthen access to quality education in low-income and developing countries. Dr Kikwete who is also the Chair of the GPE Board, led the deliberations which focused on expanding educational opportunities for millions of children who remain out of school due to poverty, conflict, climate-related disasters and other challenges. ALSO READ: ACA; Tanzania a global hub for cashew learning Through partnerships with donor countries and international development organisations, GPE aims to reach about 270 million children currently excluded from education. The initiative places special emphasis on supporting girls and children living in vulnerable circumstances, including those affected by war, drought and floods. Under the GPE 2030 campaign, about 750 million learners across 96 countries are expected to benefit from improved education systems, expanded access to learning materials, construction and rehabilitation of classrooms and laboratories, and enhanced teacher training programmes. According to GPE, Italy and Nigeria will co-host a major pledging event on September 23, 2026, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to drive the fundraising campaign forward.
