MTWARA: AGRONOMIC best practices, advanced research and a favourable investment environment are attracting international researchers, farmers and investors to study Tanzania’s cashew model, the Africa Cashew Alliance (ACA) said. The Alliance made the remarks during the opening of a five-day Master Training Programme on the cashew industry in Mtwara, recently. Held in Mtwara for the second time, the training brought together 100 participants from 11 African countries working across various segments of the cashew value chain. “This is the second time we (ACA) are organising the training programme in Tanzania because Tanzania is close to research, production and good environment. In other words we say in Tanzania we have the training facilities for our participants to learn,” said ACA Finance Manager Ms Reine Dehode. She mentioned Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) as a global hub for cashew learning research and release of high-yielding and early maturing clones that boost output. ALSO READ: ‘Youth innovation boosts competitiveness’ Ms Dehode said the training aims at building knowledge to technical people in the value chain, bringing competitive and secure probability for all actors. Mtwara Regional Commissioner Colonel Donald Msengi highly commended ACA for organising the master training in Mtwara to empower local farmers and business people in boosting cashew productivity and improving value addition. “We really thank ACA and other organisers for conducting this training in Mtwara for the second time, it means a lot to Mtwara people especially for local farmers and other actors in the cashew productivity value chain,” he said. Col Msengi urged the participants to fully attend all the sessions in the training to be equipped with knowledge to help them solve issues in the development of cashew industry in East Africa. The programme brought together participants from Tanzania (Host), Burundi, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Republic of South Sudan, Rwanda, Sierra-Leone and Uganda.
