Scientists have developed a novel brain-computer interface (BCI) capable of synthesizing speech in near real-time by analyzing neural signals. This new neuroprosthesis decodes brain activity associated with attempted speech into audible sounds, aiming to restore communication for individuals who have lost their voice due to neurodegenerative diseases or injury. The system was successfully tested on a volunteer with ALS, who could not produce intelligible speech but could still attempt to speak. Researchers trained an AI model on the patient's neural activity and pre-illness voice recordings to generate synthesized speech that captured elements of his original intonation.
This advancement offers a potential pathway to restoring a fundamental aspect of human connection and autonomy for individuals facing severe communication impairments.
