DODOMA: A total of 100 young innovators have advanced to the next stage of the Vijana Uchumi Challenge 2026, a competition aimed at generating ideas to strengthen Tanzania’s economy against global economic shocks. The initiative also aims to support the vision of the Sixth-Phase Government and the National Development Vision 2050. Announcing the list in Dodoma on Friday (June 5, 2026), the Secretary of the National Vijana Uchumi Challenge Committee, Ms Amina Sanga, told reporters that the finalists were selected following a highly competitive process that attracted 7,852 applications from across the country. The winner will walk away with 50m/-, while the first and second runners-up will receive 30m/- and 20m/-, respectively. Themed “They Think, the Nation Progresses,” the competition attracted strong participation from young innovators. According to Ms Sanga, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital services sector accounted for 30.7 percent of all submitted ideas. She added that agriculture and agricultural technologies followed with 27.8 percent, while industry and manufacturing contributed 21.3 percent of the applications received. ALSO READ: DSE Scholar Challenge deepens youth investment According to Ms Sanga, an initial screening found that 4,121 applications, equivalent to 52.5 percent of the total submissions, met the competition’s basic requirements. Of these, 458 ideas received high scores and advanced to the final evaluation stage before the top 100 contestants were selected. The committee secretary said the successful participants were chosen based on the quality of their ideas, level of innovation, feasibility of implementation and potential contribution to national economic growth. “Reaching this stage is a major achievement considering the intense competition witnessed during the selection process,” she said. The top 100 contestants will now attend a four-day intensive training camp, where they will receive professional coaching and mentorship to refine their ideas before making presentations that will determine the top 30 semi-finalists and, subsequently, the top 10 finalists. Ms Sanga further revealed that, due to the overwhelming response and the high quality of submissions, the competition prizes have been increased. In addition to the cash awards, all top 100 contestants will receive certificates of recognition, training opportunities, professional mentorship and links to various stakeholders to help develop their ideas for the benefit of the nation.
