Excise and Cooperation Minister M. Liju on Friday said that the Excise department will be strengthened with modern technology to curb the spread of substance abuse among youth and students. He was addressing the passing-out parade of 66 Civil Excise Officers at the Excise Academy parade ground in Thrissur. He received the salute from the newly trained personnel.

The Minister said a comprehensive long-term liquor policy would be announced in the coming days and urged the new recruits to uphold integrity, dedication and discipline in service. Among the 66 trainees, 41 are graduates, seven postgraduates, eight B.Tech holders, one MBA graduate, one B.Ed holder and six diploma holders.

Marking the World Environment Day, the Minister also inaugurated the district-level celebrations by planting fruit saplings on the academy campus. He distributed awards to cadets who excelled in various areas of training and handed over financial assistance to the family of Aneesh, a former temporary staff member of the academy, who passed away.

Despite adverse weather conditions, the colourful function witnessed the participation of around 1,000 people. Excise Commissioner Seeram Sambasiva Rao and Academy Director T.M. Maju also received the salute.
