World Environment Day was marked with active participation from residents of Veerapuram village in Chilamathur mandal, Sri Sathya Sai district on Friday (June 5, 2026).
District Collector A. Shyam Prasad launched a series of environmental awareness and conservation activities organized by the Forest Department on the occasion.
Interacting with the students and villagers, the Collector highlighted the importance of protecting natural resources and preserving ecological balance for future generations. He said Veerapuram village held immense tourism potential due to the arrival of migrant painted storks for nesting. He further appreciated the villagers for playing a vital role in protecting the birds.
Mr. Shyam Prasad also visited the watchtower established for tourists and bird lovers who frequent Veerapuram to observe the migratory painted storks. “The village has emerged as one of the district’s prominent eco-tourism destinations due to the annual arrival of these birds,” he said. The Collector distributed binoculars to the students, encouraging them to learn about the birds’ migration patterns, behaviour, and habitat through direct observation.
He also inspected a special seed-ball stall set up by the Forest Department. Explaining the process of preparing seed balls, Mr. Shyam Prasad distributed them to students and appealed to residents to scatter them in vacant and barren areas to support natural regeneration and expand green cover.
Meanwhile, the Collector inaugurated a newly established tea shop run by a women’s self-help group. He stated that the DWCRA groups could play a vital role in strengthening the tourism potential in the district.
