Wayanad district has been put on high alert following forecasts of heavy rainfall. The weather agency has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the hill district on June 6 and 7 (Saturday and Sunday).
In view of the alert, an emergency meeting of district-level officials was convened on Friday (June 5) under the chairmanship of District Collector D.R. Meghasree to review preparedness measures. The Collector has declared a holiday on Saturday for all educational institutions in the district, including professional colleges. The holiday also applies to religious study classes, tuition centres and special schools. However, residential schools and residential colleges are exempt from the holiday.
Ms. Meghasree, who is also the chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, has ordered the suspension of operations at all quarries in the district and the suspension of all machine-assisted earth-moving activities.
The Collector has also directed the suspension of operations at tourist destinations, including homestays, located in vulnerable, disaster-prone areas. In addition, all adventure tourism activities and trekking programmes have been ordered to be halted.
