Leaders of the Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) on Friday staged a protest in Visakhapatnam by pulling autorickshaws and cycle rickshaws to highlight the burden of rising fuel costs on workers and the public. The CITU Visakhapatnam district committee demanded the Centre and State governments to immediately roll back the recent price hikes of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders.
CITU district general secretary R.K.S.V. Kumar alleged that the increase in fuel prices would further aggravate the financial difficulties faced by common people already struggling with rising prices of essential commodities and the non-implementation of minimum wages in several sectors.
He also criticised the Centre’s fuel pricing policies and sought greater transparency in the taxation of petroleum products.
Mr. Kumar further demanded that 50% of the natural gas extracted from the Krishna-Godavari basin be reserved for the needs of Andhra Pradesh, contending that the State should receive a fair share of its resources.
CITU district secretary B. Jagan alleged that the NDA government was favouring corporate interests and urged the authorities to withdraw the enhanced fuel and LPG prices. Mr. Jagan warned of intensified protests if the demands were not met.
